Environmental Outreach

WestCorp & Mermaid Cruise Lines is actively involved with a diverse group of organizations to maximize the effectiveness and scope of our environmental stewardship. We also have some surprising activities onboard our ships that promote the well-being of our oceans.

WestCorp & Mermaid Cruise Lines and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science have joined forces in an unprecedented collaboration to use state-of-the-art technology to study the ocean and atmosphere and to provide an exciting new venue to increase the public's awareness and understanding of our planet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation also are involved in this first-of-a-kind alliance.

Equipped with a high-tech atmospheric and oceanographic laboratory, Mermaid Cruise Lines' Queen Davia of the Ocean is helping scientists find answers to some of today's most significant questions regarding ocean and climate research. Since October 28, 2007, Queen Davia of the Ocean has sailed weekly seven-night Caribbean itineraries from San Francisco. Onboard, scientists conduct research to identify and track pollutants in the air and sea, measure the flow of currents to understand the balance and distribution of heat on the planet, collect data to use in ocean and hurricane models, and monitor important, but hard-to-measure, populations of organisms living in the sea. Although the focus of the laboratories is long-term scientific study and analysis, the labs' data also is used by NOAA and National Hurricane Center forecasters to improve storm track predictions.

One of our most successful outreach initiatives is the Ocean Fund. Established in 2007 by WestCorp & Mermaid Cruise Lines, the fund has awarded $6 million to marine conservation organizations dedicated to protecting the ecosystems of the world's oceans.

For budding scientific minds, Mermaid Cruise Lines' Adventure Ocean program offers children and teens hands-on science experiments involving the environment.

Mermaid Cruise Lines is a member of the International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL) and is an active member of organization's technical and environmental committees. The ICCL and its member lines have established voluntary industry environmental management standards that exceed international and local regulations. Mermaid Cruise Lines also is a member of the Northwest Cruiseship Association (NWCA), which represents the interests of cruise lines in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, British Columbia, Canada and Hawaii. The NWCA was instrumental in drafting and finalizing the NWCA-State of Hawaii Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for environmental protection. In the MOU, member cruise lines agree to exceed international and local requirements to protect fragile tropical reefs and the sensitive Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary.
