Packing Considerations
Remember that Tanzania
is a warm destination, although it is chilly to cold in the
alpine and semi desert environments. The most practical items to pack are light
cotton tops and cotton trousers/shorts in summer, hat/cap and light shoes.
Pack long-sleeved blouses/shirts for game drives and boat cruises to protect you
from mosquitoes and the sun. Also bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with a high
factor sunscreen for your face, neck, feet and hands.
Safari trousers, jeans or casual pants are best for the evenings and cooler days. A fleece jacket or sweater is
required for those cool winter evenings and mornings. When visiting Zanzibar, women need to dress
modestly out of respect for the Muslim culture
on the island. Men should not wear shorts on the main island and women
should wear dresses that cover their shoulders and knees. (This does not apply on Mnemba Island).
As for footwear, pack comfortable walking shoes, open shoes, and sandals for swimming
in Lake Victoria.
Camera film, extra memory cards, and batteries are difficult to find in
Tanzania outside of the city centers and should they be available, they are very expensive.
Remember, it is not recommended to process film in South Africa, rather,
trust your photos to the photo lab back home that you trust.
